Researchers studied 133 obese people who had echocardiograms before gastric bypass surgery. Average age was 48 years. Forty had diabetes and 93 did not. Moderate or severe left heart weakness was found in 24 of 40 obese diabetics (60%) and in 21 of 93 obese non- diabetics (23%).
