(It's usually a big "A") ----------------------------------------------------------- May, 2005 - Sleep disturbances are common in older people with chronic heart failure. This reduces their quality of life. Researchers searched Medline and CINAHL databases from 1989 to July of 2004. They found that sleep disordered breathing and insomnia were the most common sleep problems. Sleep disordered breathing occurred in 45% to 82% of CHFers, and insomnia in 33% of CHFers. Sleep disordered breathing causes frequent awakenings, which has proven bad effects on the heart. Insomnia reduces quality of life and causes daytime fatigue. Researchers conclude that many CHFers have sleep problems, and that when their treatment plan is laid out, it should include solutions to these sleep problems whenever possible.
